What Is a Public Service Commissioner?
A Georgia Public Service Commissioner is one of five elected officials on the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), which regulates:
Electric utilities (like Georgia Power)
Natural gas providers
Telecommunications
Intrastate transportation
The PSC ensures that Georgians receive safe, reliable, and fairly priced services from competent and financially stable companies.
Commissioners:
Approve long-term utility plans (like Georgia Power’s Integrated Resource Plan)
Set rates
Hear consumer complaints
Enforce regulatory standards
Must reside in one of five districts but are elected statewide
Serve a six-year term
Must not have financial ties to utility companies
ℹ️ All current PSC members are Republican.
Why a special election now?
The last PSC election was in 2020. Since 2022, elections have been on hold due to a federal lawsuit challenging the election process for commissioners violates the Voting Rights Act. The U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to hear the case, allowing elections to proceed under the current system.
